Traces of Revolution in Southeast Asia

Revolution is only truly Revolution if it is a continuous struggle. Not just an external struggle against an enemy, but an inner struggle, fighting and subduing all negative aspects which hinder or do damage to the course of the Revolution. In this light Revolution is… a mighty symphony of victory over the enemy and over oneself.
– Sukarno

The revolution of 1896, in a sense, remains unfinished. We have yet to achieve freedom from the shackles of an economy beset by inimical landlord-tenant relationship, which hinders us from exerting the full measure of our talents and energies. We have yet to achieve freedom from the darkness of poverty, disease, and ignorance. We have yet to achieve the primary conditions that would inspire and encourage our people to assume attitudes of purposeful determination, to participate actively in the dreams of our leaders, and to roll up their sleeves and dedicate themselves to a more active and voluntary share of nation-building.
– Diosdado Macapagal

Independence is indeed a milestone, but it is only the threshold to high endeavour-the creation of a new and sovereign State. At this solemn moment therefore I call upon you all to dedicate yourselves to the service of the new Malaya: to work and strive with hand and brain to create a new nation, inspired by the ideals of justice and liberty-a beacon of light in a disturbed and distracted world.
– Tunku Abdul Rahman
