Running Barefoot

The gate's bolt opens
She breaks free from the ancient curse
Her feet hurt as she run barefoot
Yet the yearning for freedom, to live
Was the louder than the pain
Bright lights and thundering music
They guide her way
Her clothes were tattered, stained with tears
And blood
The shaman blows his horn
The prison is nowhere in sight
Miles and miles until finally
She stops
This time, no one can see her
Except the armadillo thirsty for dew
Her heart screams
Her knees are as shattered as her soul
She left before it started
Drowned by fear she absconded a promise
Made love to him for one last time
She breaks free from the ancient curse
The gate's bolt opens.
